We are currently seeking an Assistant Electrification Engineer with specialised skills in OLE Catenary System Design to join our Electrification Team in Manchester to work with multidisciplinary teams delivering a portfolio of exciting, varied rail projects as part of an established Rail Business.
You will be part of a team responsible for the successful delivery of our design commissions for major clients including Network Rail, Contractors, Suppliers and other agencies such as Train Operators, Councils, Passenger Transport Executives and academic institutions.
The Role - What we're looking for in you
We are looking for a passionate Assistant Electrification Engineer, with a sound technical knowledge of catenary system design to be part our North West & Yorkshire Rail Electrification team that is highly motivated and with a desire to tackle interesting problems with the opportunity of finding innovative solutions.
Ensuring the successful delivery of technically excellent multidisciplinary rail projects and bids across our UK portfolio, you will be responsible for, and typical activities will include:
Determining the OLE design requirements from our client brief and be able to make sound decisions and propose the right design solution.
Produce the required OLE design to multidisciplinary design teams on large or medium sized projects.
Checking the OLE designs and calculations within implementation and renewal projects.
Sharing knowledge, best practice and innovation across our business, providing guidance, training and feedback with other related disciplines and skills, locally and across the UK.
Current multidisciplinary projects across various GRIP Stages and include Transpennine Route Upgrade, Brent Cross, Headbolt Lane and Midland Main Line Electrification.
The position offers scope for personal skill development, especially in relation to increasing of Electrification expertise within a Rail environment and also mentoring more junior members of the team. The focus will be on developing existing skills and experience and sharing this experience with other team members, in a stimulating and challenging project environment, and so enhancing Arup’s overall electrification engineering and rail capability.
Reporting to our Electrification Team Leader and supported by our discipline Technical Head, you will work with project teams of Railway and Infrastructure Engineers at bid and project delivery stage. You will also develop relationships with our wider electrification and rail communities and our client’s engineering, assurance and project teams.
Essential Skills and Knowledge
Experience in the production of Overhead Line Equipment Feasibility, Scheme and Detailed Design reports, layouts, schematics and calculations (including switch and crossing renewal and remodeling, cross-sections, sectioning, bills of qualities, Earthing and Bonding) within multidisciplinary rail projects.
Knowledgeable in the production of drawings using CAD (e.g. Bentley MicroStation) software.
Experienced in the use of design software (e.g. Linear Draft).
Competent in the use of MS Office products, in particular using Word and Excel
Desirable Skills and Knowledge
Experience in undertaking site surveys / site visits and reporting on asset condition
Experience in production of 3d design models
Experience in the use of Projectwise
Understanding of Third Rail and other railway electrification systems.
Understanding of structural and mechanical principles associated with OLE equipment design.
An appropriate HNC / HND or equivalent qualification.
Ideally, an associate member of the IMechE or IET.
Working toward Incorporated Engineer with the IMechE or IET or similar would be an advantage.
