We’re looking for a SQL DBA,to join the Technology team at Penguin Random House, based at our Colchester office.
You will be working within the Infrastructure Operations Team in, the Data Specialist (DBA) is a skilled Infrastructure Engineer that whilst having broad Infrastructure skills who is a specialist in Data Management & Database Administration.
You’re Knowledge, Skills that are required for this role:
The team is responsible for both “keeping the lights on” and working with Project teams to deliver new and upgraded systems. Taking escalations from the Service Desk the Infrastructure team identify and resolve issues and problems.
Infrastructure Operations Team
The Infrastructure Operations team within Infrastructure are responsible for maintaining all elements of the PRH technology estate including Storage, Virtualisation, Windows and Linux Servers O/S Management and Database Platforms. Members of the team will have a specialist in one or more specific areas, but will have a broad understanding of the technologies and how they interact to support the organisation. The team have a support remit of 1000+ VM’s with approximately 400 DB’s.
Data Specialist (DBA)
As part of the team providing the technology owner role for Data, elements of responsibility for capacity planning, product lifecycles, platform optimisation, development and documentation will fall under the remit of this role, including being the subject matter expert for the Change and Major Incident processes and an escalation point for other team members, to ensure between the team there is full cover of the Data portfolio. The role holder will also own technical relationships with appropriate 3rd Parties and work with the Architecture Team and Security, DR & Backup functions to ensure that the systems are resilient, secure and recoverable.
You will also provide out of hours working and/or on-call support as required.
Due to the technical nature of the role, a high level of attention to detail is required, and also an ability to both develop and follow processes to ensure consistent and repeatable outcomes.
You will also need:
Hands on technical expert in a range of technologies, who is driven, able to work on their own and hit the ground running.
Microsoft SQL administration skills.
Strong understanding of database modelling, design and architecture.
T-SQL Scripting and T-SQL Performance tuning.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Strong Passion for Customer Service and Best Practice.
Working technical experience with designing, building, installing, configuring and supporting database servers.
MS SQL Server High Availability skills & experience. Experience in any of the following Database Mirroring, Replication, Log Shipping, and Clustering and Always on High Availability Groups would be highly advantageous.
A good familiarity with and preferably in-depth technical knowledge of Windows server platforms. With a working knowledge of PowerShell
Performance monitoring, troubleshooting and tuning of MS SQL Server Installations.
Database security design and implementation.
Able to demonstrate flexibility and motivation, as well as excellent problem solving capability and team working.
Ability to manage 3rd party vendors.
Nice to have skills:
The role is primarily focussed on MS SQL Server however experience of any of the following: MySQL, IBM Netezza or Remote Data Services for AWS would be beneficial.
A good familiarity with Linux. With a working knowledge of BASH scripting
MS SQL Server Services, such as SSAS, SSRS and SSIS.
Understanding of support team working practices and ITIL.
Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws.
