Technical Systems Engineer - Senior
Velocity Technology Solutions is expanding and is adding an experienced Technical Systems Engineer - Senior to join our dynamic and highly successful team. We are currently interviewing for an experienced Senior Technical Systems Engineer for our global Unix support team. Velocity offers Cloud services across public, private and hybrid cloud environments and is an Advanced AWS partner.
The candidate will preferably be from a design, build and support environment and used to handling the day-to-day technical support issues and enhancements associated with Unix and Linux environments that underpin ERP or other large-scale database centric applications. The candidate will beresponsible for the day-to-day administration of these systems and should be able to work under minimal supervision.
Performs the full spectrum of configuration and support tasks for all Velocity hosted, and remotely managed, Unix and Linux Operating Systems, including:
o Installation, configuration and upgrades
o Security and hardening
o Storage, I/O monitoring and sizing/capacity planning
o Patch and package management
o Performance tuning and monitoring availability and performance
o Networking configuration and support
o Scripting, for the development of tools and/or monitoring scripts etc.
o Providing problem resolution on systems for internal and external customers
May provide mentoring and leadership to other Systems Engineers and support staff
Develops procedures for Computer Operations staff
Provides training on systems for Computer Operations staff
Participation in a 24-hour on-call rota system may be required
Performs other duties as requested
Computing Science degree, or minimum 6 years technical experience, required
Experience in the areas of change management, capacity planning, incident tracking and reporting, monitoring and alerting, system upgrades, backup and recovery required
You must ensure that compliance with data protection legislation under the DPA, EU GDPR, any other applicable data protection legislation.
Excellent knowledge of Unix and Linux server administration
AIX administration, on pSeries hardware and LPARs
Excellent knowledge of Linux, including Red Hat and/or Oracle Linux
Solaris administration, including Zones
Enterprise level storage systems knowledge would be advantageous
Excellent troubleshooting and diagnostics skills
Excellent communication, documentation and customer skills
A basic knowledge of Oracle databases and VMware vSphere virtualisation would be useful
A flexible and adaptable approach is essential, to accommodate the ever-changing requirements and priorities of a busy technical team and to work within customer requirements and schedules
Attention to detail, flexibility, a pragmatic approach and a passion for new technologies
Good interpersonal and organisational skills
The ability to multi-task between different customers and environments
