The Propulsion Technologies Group (PTG) forms part of the Vehicle Certification Agency’s Type-Approval Authority division. The PTG Engineer’s role focuses on two main project areas: firstly, and primarily, the technical support of colleagues, the Department for Transport (DfT), industry, and the public with regards to offering guidance and interpretation of current and future environmental type-approval legislation; and secondly, providing operational support to PTG’s emissions test programmes for the Market Surveillance Unit (MSU) and In-Service Conformity (ISC) purposes, as required.
Within your role you will:
- Respond to technical questions on environmental-based automotive legislation from a variety of stakeholders;
- Develop Technical Interpretations to guide engineering colleagues and industry where legislation is unclear;
- Follow regulatory developments and communicate key updates to engineering teams as well as supporting activities with DfT on future regulations;
- Respond and manage any queries concerning VCA’s environmental approvals;
- Support the Market Surveillance and In-Service Conformity annual testing programmes for emissions, including test support, data analysis and administrative tasks;
- Assist in the making and delivery of environmental training material to internal and external audiences.
This role will offer you the opportunity to develop your knowledge on automotive type-approval legislation, vehicle emissions testing and vehicle emissions control system analysis along with a variety of courses and conferences to develop on emerging vehicle technologies.
Although we primarily engage with our stakeholder through video conference at the moment, there will be the opportuninity going forward for regular travel both within the UK and overseas.
You will have excellent knowledge of automotive technology, type-approval requirements and national, EU and UNECE automotive legislation. You’ll have a proven track record of taking ownership and timely, high quality delivery within automotive or other engineering disciplines such as defence, aerospace, civil and electronics. You are someone who takes an agile yet methodical approach, who is also able to learn quickly and work through complex problems and report effectively and concisely.
You are someone who can lead and work well as part of a team, where you’re able to draw on the skills of those around you to achieve departmental objectives. You will have excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing, with the ability to adapt your delivery to suit a wide variety of audiences, maximising both impact and understanding. You are someone who gains rapport quickly with others as you build effective working relationships with both colleagues and stakeholders.
