About the Role:
Our Highways team in Birmingham is expanding rapidly to meet the significant workload we have secured locally and across the North of England. This includes WSPs appointment as one of two Digitally Enabled Designers on Highways England’s Smart Motorway Alliance (SMA) framework.
We are seeking a Principal Engineer/Associate with experience in the Highways Sector, who also has specific design and management experience in Smart Motorway schemes. The successful candidate will form part of an established and experienced team working on exciting highway projects, including Smart Motorway schemes that are awarded under the SMA. Due to recent successes the team is growing and offers excellent opportunities for the right candidate seeking new and exciting opportunities.
The successful candidate will develop and deliver projects through various stages of design from feasibility to planning/detailed design and onto construction. You will also be required to support the Group Managers in leadership of people, projects, clients and business performance across the Midlands
A typical week would include:
We are specifically looking for someone who can undertake the Highways Workstream lead role on Smart Motorway schemes.
The candidate should have previous experience and a comprehensive understanding of Smart Motorway standards, processes and governance.
You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the project team, ensuring delivery of their scope to time and budget.
Responsible for technical reviews of any team outputs with the ability to work and coordinate with multiple disciplines.
We'd love to hear from you if you have:
Degree qualification or equivalent
Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status of an appropriate institution or demonstrable experience.
Competent to check, certify and authorise for issue designs, documents, approvals, and reports.
Proven experience in the technical and commercial management of highway projects and specifically Smart Motorway schemes.
Displays collaborative behaviors, working with the Client, On-Site Assembly Partner (Contractor and their supply chain), production hub and other stakeholders.
Capable of working to tight project time scales, work comfortably under pressure and have an open and honest approach. Evidence of good communication and team work skills will be sought.
Preparation of departures from standards using DAS.
Understanding and demonstratable experience of digital delivery.
Skills in one or more industry standard design software (ideally Autodesk Civil3D)
Production of technical reports as required
Technical input to the agreement and pricing of project briefs, proposals and deliverables with Project Managers.
Mentoring and supervising the output of junior staff
Confidence to seek clarification of instructions and work scope
Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
Good written and verbal communication skills
Full, clean driver’s licence
Proficient in use of standard office software
