Howden is developing and expanding our business, and we are therefore looking for a Mechanical Design & Materials Engineer to join our Howden Technology business.
In this role you will undertake specialist consultancy projects focused on mechanical design and materials, providing a product development and problem solving service to Howden's business units. Adopting where appropriate a multidisciplinary approach by utilising the skills and experience both within Howden and elsewhere.
What Needs To Be Done?
To ensure that everyone’s health and safety is prioritised.
To carry out investigations relating to mechanical design or materials and to compile technical reports providing solutions to Business Units or Project Teams.
To develop and optimise products in support of strategic development projects.
To use HBE (Howden Business Excellence) tools to identify the root cause of technical problems being investigated and to disseminate the lessons learned to Business Units to prevent reoccurrence.
To conduct assessments of the required strength or fitness for service of components.
To develop, maintain and promote analysis tools and methods across Howden.
To maintain an awareness of current techniques and technologies (analysis, manufacturing, 3D printing, inspection) to ensure that we are using the most appropriate methods and techniques and leverage these to Howden’s advantage.
To promote the capabilities of Howden Technology’s analysis work with other Business Units.
To support engineers throughout the business by responding to their enquires regardless of size.
To collaborate with other engineers and project management to ensure timely delivery of complete solutions.
What Do You Need To Bring?
Essential skills, knowledge & behaviours
Minimum BEng/BSc Degree in Engineering or equivalent qualification
Competence in mechanical design
Competence in Finite Element Analysis
Competence in materials science
Experience with 3D CAD modelling, preferably with Autodesk Inventor
Aptitude for failure investigation including the identification of the root cause
Strives to maintain a sound knowledge of related processes, procedures and theory
Strong inter-personal skills; Good team player with the ability to work with people from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds
Ability to communicate with both in-house and external audiences at all levels
Ability to clearly explain complex technical subject in the written and verbal medium
Accurately captures, records and communicates information
Sets personal deliverables and works to high standards
Ability to multi-task and prioritise work
Enjoys difficult challenges, finding solutions not problems
Desirable skills, knowledge & behaviours
Knowledge of advanced non-linear Finite Element Analysis
Knowledge of contact modelling
Knowledge of manufacturing methods and process
Knowledge of rotating machinery/rotordynamcis
Knoweldge of fatigue analysis
Experience with MSC Finite Element Analysis products
Ability to navigate between detail and the bigger picture
Knowledge of general business processes
Strives to maintain a sound knowledge of the business
Chartered Engineer status
