Network Information Services (NIS) is a WSP and Thales joint venture company which operates the National Traffic Information Service on behalf of Highways England. This service is responsible for monitoring the Highways England road network, providing information in response to events on the road and delivery of accurate up-to-date traffic information both to road users and to other data users across a set of information channels.
NIS is currently looking to recruit a Traffic Management Operator (TMO) based at the NTOC in Quinton, Birmingham. This role is to be an integral part of a busy operational information centre, responsible for minimising the effects on the Highways England Network of current and forecast incidents. It will predominantly focus on the day to day the management of incidents on the network, the setting of Variable Message Signs (VMS) and the validation of automatic roadwork events.
The TMO will report directly to the Shift Leader and will form a vital part of the NIS Information Centre Team. The TMO will work on a 24/7 shift pattern. They will also be expected to work collaboratively with Highways England National Incident Liaison Operators (NILO).
A typical week would include:
Receive information from various sources with regards to events/incidents occurring on the Strategic Road Network (SRN), assess information , create and manage events on the National Traffic Information Service system where applicable
Manage NTIS generated events
Assist the customer with the management of events/incidents via the setting of VMS across the SRN
Monitor traffic data to help detect current events
Validate and manage automated roadwork events
Ensure that all stakeholders and other interested parties are informed and consulted in accordance with agreed procedures
Work a shift pattern order to cover 24/7 operations
Any other responsibilities as delegated by the Information Centre Lead, Deputy information Centre Lead or Shift Leader
