About the opportunity
The PaaS Operations Engineer will progress the development and support of the FIL PaaS platform to create solutions that better serve the business and ultimately the Customer. The role is expected to participate in all areas of PaaS Operations, working with other team members to identify challenges, research solutions under guidance, propose approaches for discussion, conduct pre-defined pilots and support solutions through to implementation across the PaaS platform.
Through paired programming activities, the role will support the evolution of the PaaS platform with an ‘infrastructure as code’ philosophy, ensuring knowledge of best practise techniques are understood. The role will align to industry standard cloud principles, encouraging and support the Delivery teams to use the platform assisting in 2nd line troubleshooting where necessary. The role requires ‘hands-on’ engineering skills in at least 1 programming language.
Your Key Accountabilities
Must ensure the FIL PaaS platform remains supportable, flexible & aligned to the original design operative principles.
Will provide 2nd line operational platform support for all FIL PaaS services & environments. This will include being able to support & troubleshoot key areas of the FIL PaaS stack & may include being a member of the oncall 24 * 7 rota.
The candidate will be expected to get involved in all areas of PaaS Operations, such as inception/pointing/standups etc taking the initiative to own varied stories across the entire PaaS stack through to completion.
Working closely with other PaaS Engineers, the candidate will be expected to deliver solutions through paired programming activities & test driven development, whilst taking the initiative to develop further programming skills & best practise capabilities.
The role will include the ability to work through the challenge of engineering innovative solutions to a desired automatic immutable end state with other PaaS engineers, reliant on low cost, low maintenance open source technologies (where possible) aligned to the PaaS Product Roadmap as agreed with the PaaS Platform Owner.
The candidate will be expected to keep up to date with the latest news within the Cloud Foundry community & within their original area of expertise (ie networks, virtualisation, development) in terms of strategic roadmap & functionality to further support the PaaS Platform Owner in evolving the FIL PaaS service.
Your skills and experience
You will need to come from a strong background in one of the following areas :
Development - experience in software development & integration, including languages, systems and frameworks such as Spring/Java, Ruby/Rails, Go, messaging (RabbitMQ/AMQP, JMS), NoSQL.
You should have some knowledge & a general interest in cloud platform technologies/services such as Cloud Foundry, Heroku, & OpenStack, AWS, Azure or vCloud.
Be aware of the principles around DevOps concepts & how a PaaS operates.
Good understanding of systems monitoring, alerting and analytics (New Relic, HP-OV, Sitescope, Splunk, VMware vROPS)
You will need proven Python and Bash scripting skills (or similar)
You should have proven experience creating innovative, cost effective & timely solutions through automation.
You will have proven ‘hands-on’ technical skills in your field of expertise, showing initiative and have a ‘can-do’ approach.
You should have some experience of infrastructure components that support a PaaS platform itself (i.e. networking, compute resources & data stores).
Working knowledge of Layer 2-7 networking principles, load balancers, IP addressing, firewalls & SDNs advantageous.
Working knowledge of Information Security, Data Privacy & regulatory compliance
Must be a self-starter capable of collaboration across team boundaries to drive issues to conclusion.
Must have strong influencing skills based on sound judgement, capable of breaking detailed technical complexity into simple components suitable for a wider audience.
Highly motivated team player, willing to share knowledge & information that forms strong relationships with colleagues with good interpersonal skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
Prepared to travel to Kingswood, Tonbridge or London as part of role.
