Purpose of the Role:
Reporting to the Principal Engineer you will Work alongside system project engineers to design Interior components and systems from Concept through to release for production.
You will own the design of modules and be the architect of the engineering execution of designs that deliver the desires of the design studio to strict weight, cost and quality targets of the business.
Support, be part of and develop within the core team that delivers brand defining, high quality interiors that exceed all customer expectations.
During some program phases your expertise could be deployed into other disciplines in the engineering team.
Understands and supports the package constraints for the components. Working with suppliers, Concept teams & DMU to ensure components and systems meet technical and package targets and to deliver detailed designs on time to predetermined quality, cost and weight targets, within DFM requirements.
Ensures design solutions are optimised to support vehicle assembly & service requirements
Works with other team members to develop component and system specifications.
Works with the other designers and the component supplier to achieve efficient, innovative and lightweight designs.
Drive and lead the offsite design team to deliver the systems owned according to the McLaren standards
Ensure design solutions deliver systems that meet attribute targets in NVH, ergonomic, durability, visibility & performance related attributes.
Understands system & component requirements.
Ensures the components interface seamlessly to the wider car including structural interfaces & body panels.
Support cross functional design reviews
Establish and control design release, ER in line with ETRS requirements
Support and evaluate results of component testing
Support vehicle manufacturing
Support Technical Specification, DFMEA & DVP activities.
Support preparation and presentation of material for external and internal project reviews
BOM definition and management to include identifying cost & weight reduction initiatives to deliver targets.
Review and manage the opening and closure of design concerns.
Knowledge, skills and experience
You will have technical knowledge and experience of Interior modules design together with high and medium volume production technologies.
Other engineering disciplines will be considered if you can demonstrate an appropriate level of expertise in relevant technologies – Injection moulding’s, mechanism design, light weight composites, castings and fabrications.
Feasibility assessment of design proposals, including design for manufacture and DFMEA’s.
You will be able to confidently analyse and overcome technical challenges with workable and innovative engineering solutions.
Specific knowledge of Legislative and automotive design constraints for interior systems preferred.
PC literate and at ease with MS Office products.
Good CATIA V5 2D/3D skills with GD&T application experience.
Experienced in OEM or tier one component & System design preferred.
Understanding of component & system design within an APQP or similar framework including FMEA, component planning and PPAP preferred.
Qualifications and Training
Mechanical or Automotive Engineering Degree 2:1 or above, or equivalent qualification.
Core Technical Skills
Strong engineering design experience, with automotive design advantageous.
Proven track record and knowledge of relevant Interior component system design.
Adopts a creative & thoughtful approach to concept design and solving engineering problems with good attention to detail.
Ability to assess feasibility of designs including design for manufacture and DFMEA input.
Experience in component release, BOM management and problem solving (e.g. 8D or PPS).
Ability to communicate clearly with design and development groups
Well organised, delivery focused – with demonstrable record of on-time delivery
Good team skills, willingness to work cross-functionally.
An ability to deliver under pressure with an appetite for success.
