Graduate Materials Engineer
The Materials Group in KBR offers an exciting entry point from which to develop your career in the Oil and Gas industry and will expose you to a wide breadth of materials engineering design issues. Topics such as materials selection, welding, non destructive testing, coatings and cathodic protection for offshore and onshore projects fall within the responsibility of this group within KBR. Engineers in the team work on projects from concept through to detailed design phase. The work is varied and challenging and besides undertaking corrosion assessments and recommending materials of construction, the work also requires review of supplier fabrication data such as welding procedures, dealing with failure investigations and assessing materials substitution and concessions requests.
At the heart of projects
Our Engineers work on a wide range of projects both offshore and onshore. This involves subsea developments, pipelines, jackets, topsides processing, floating production facilities and onshore processing facilities. In addition, we support the application of KBR Licensor technology in areas such as refineries and ammonia production facilities.
The projects are executed in a number of global locations and there is close interaction with KBR offices worldwide. The project environment is dynamic with key drivers such as safety, quality, cost and schedule all playing a part in the technical decision making process. Materials Engineers work closely with other project disciplines to provide specifications for materials and fabrication. As well as providing input to Piping, Mechanical, Instruments, Structural, Subsea and Pipelines with technical specifications and data sheet generation, support is also provided to Procurement and Inspection Groups for critical items such as pipeline material, pressure vessels and heat exchangers.
Very much a global team there is an active Materials Community of Practise where employees can share technical challenges and access knowledge gained from KBR projects over many years. Global subject matter experts within the team give added depth is areas such as cathodic protection, coatings and NDT.
Opportunities within Materials Engineering
From your arrival in the company we actively support you in a training programme aligned with gaining professional chartership. This will be a combination of on-the-job, in-house and external training and lectures and will continue beyond the formal graduate training period with support to your on-going career development and the maintenance of your professional competence. All our engineers are corporate members of recognised Institutes (for example IOM3, TWI, IIW, NACE) and our most Senior Engineers are Fellows.
Graduates are assigned a dedicated mentor as well as having access to graduate committees such as the KBR IMPACT global network which promotes professional and social activities within the organization. The training is designed to provide immediate exposure to Materials related design issues on various live projects, for a wide spectrum of international client organisations. This allows our graduates not only to gain a full appreciation of the oil and gas industry but also the opportunity to develop a number of specialisations.
