Within Beauty & Personal Care division, we are building new, world-class capability to help us develop innovations that out-perform the competition and build equity for our leading brands.
An opportunity has arisen for a PhD/EngD qualified Chemical / Process Engineer to join the Science & Technology Product Engineering team in Beauty & Personal Care at Port Sunlight & Materials Innovation Factory (Liverpool), to contribute to the on-going development and optimisation of manufacturing processes for Beauty & Personal Care.
The role requires strong team working capability across multi-disciplinary project teams where everybody contributes to achieving the same goal. Ideally suited to an energetic, self-motivated, independent and resourceful research engineer / scientist with excellent people skills, and a desire to further develop their scientific skills. The successful candidate will be involved in a range of internal and external partnerships, both academic and industrial, targeting the development of new technologies and capabilities.
Previous experience in process development, optimisation, tracking and scale-up for formulations within FMCG, and the ability to apply that expertise in the development of new insights would be beneficial. Understanding of the process challenges associated with the manufacture of non-Newtonian fluids is desirable.
The role will require regular working at the Advanced Manufacturing Centre (AMC) pilot plant in Port Sunlight R&D as well as the Material Innovation Factory (MIF) at the University of Liverpool.
The role primarily involves designing, planning and conducting experiments for optimisation of batch and semi-continuous manufacturing processes, new process development for novel formulations, analysis of associated process data and development of data driven process insights.
The role will report to a Process Research Manager and the job holder’s responsibilities will include the following:
Leading technical workstream(s) within Product Engineering which deliver breakthrough technologies to agreed project milestones. This may include leading team members to deliver a project plan.
Conducting and leading processing investigations yourself and with team members, using lab and pilot scale equipment to develop hypotheses and solutions. This may include equipment set-up, batching, filling, clean-up and equipment maintenance.
Using structured approaches for capturing and analysing data, with the ambition to create data driven process models.
Creating, evaluating and demonstrating product prototypes that meet the technical & consumer requirements.
Contributing to the development of our strategy for process data analysis including building and developing your own expertise in process data analysis.
Building and using an external network (academia, SMEs and large-scale partners) to bring new technologies to solve business problems.
Delivering high quality written and oral communications within the team and to stakeholders – in both technical and non-technical environments.
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
PhD/EngD in Chemical / Process Engineering or Physical Chemistry or related discipline, OR a first degree together with relevant industrial R&D experience.
Research experience in the processing of complex liquid / soft solid products.
Experience with applying advanced process measurement techniques to monitor or control processes
Excellent computing and data analysis skills including Design of Experiments and analysis of large data sets such as process data logs.
Excellent communication, interpersonal and strategic influencing skills
Evidence of leadership potential and the ability to deliver through others.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
Industrial research experience in the formulation and processing of Personal or Home Care liquid / soft solid products and characterization of their microstructure.
Track record of using processing insights to deliver novel product prototypes.
Experience of directing process research, which generates scale up principles from lab to pilot plant.
Awareness of project management processes and delivering to tight deadlines.
Evidence of ability to develop strong scientific networks
Experience of leading / working in multi-disciplinary teams.
