Reporting to the Chief Metallurgist the role of R&D Materials Engineer will provide technical support to design, manufacturing and purchasing within the R&D Group. The responsibilities for the role include:
To provide materials and heat treatment support to the Engineering and Manufacturing departments, including support for Xtrac’s customers and Xtrac Inc.
To support the Chief Metallurgist in developing and implementing the materials development strategy.
To oversee and conduct research into materials and heat treatment methods, under the guidance of the Chief Metallurgist.
To work with the Chief Metallurgist and Heat Treatment Manager to ensure metallurgical and heat treatment processes and procedures are understood and if necessary, re-document, train and develop.
To undertake investigative work into manufacturing issues, condition assessments, non-conformance analysis and metallurgical first article inspections. This includes preparation of test samples as required.
To identify requirements for testing and produce test requirements and specifications through liaison with customers and Xtrac engineers.
To assist with the day-to-day running of the metallurgy function of the R&D department, including scheduling, running and reporting of tests.
To analyse test data using excel or alternative analysis software, and report on that test data.
To be conversant and qualified to undertake non-destructive test techniques including magnetic particle inspection and Nital Etch, according to company guidelines.
To attend reviews as required and ensure metallurgical issues are represented.
To make representation for the Chief Metallurgist and act as deputy as required.
To undertake audits as required.
To undertake personnel development and attend performance reviews as required.
To observe health and safety rules at all times.
To follow company quality procedures, standards and work instructions.
To carry out reasonable duties as requested by Management.
You will have a minimum of BEng or BSc, ideally in a material, metallurgical or engineering discipline as well as a foundation in material science including structure, performance and behaviour. Ideally you will have knowledge of heat treatment techniques however this is not essential.
You must have a minimum of two years experience of a machining, heat treatment or manufacture environment. You will need to be self sufficient in conducting materials and condition assessment investigations and have experience in specifying, implementing, running and reporting on material test programmes. Having an understanding of internal audit processes and knowledge of IMDS would be advantageous however is not a must.
You will have good IT skills and knowledge of Word and Excel. You will be organised and have a structured approach to problem solving as well as having good time management skills to manage workload and meet deadlines when work priorities change quickly. Having excellent communication skills and being able to give clear and concise instruction and ensure tasks are completed is critical for the successful candidate, along with having the ability to write technical reports with clear conclusions and recommendations.
