Organisation position and purpose:
The Institute’s use of a variety of communications channels, including online media, is vital to maintain and enhance the reputation of the Institute and the work that it does. The quality of content reflects directly on the values of the Institute and this role will have a key part to play in developing and implementing the Institute’s Digital Engagement Strategy. Reporting to the Head of Communications and Engagement (HCE), the DCC will oversee the planning and scheduling of content and delivery of effective communications and engagement activities across internal and external stakeholders. The role has responsibility for digital communications including, but not limited to, web development and content management, intranet, social media, e-newsletters, information screens and video and audio journalism.
Job specification and responsibilities
Responsible for all digital communications, which will include:
Developing and implementing a Digital Communications Strategy as part of the Communications Strategy in conjunction with the Head of Communications and Engagement that supports the Institute’s corporate vision and strategy and public engagement activity.
Overseeing website delivery solutions, writing a range of content types for web and social media, managing video production and undertaking content curation activity.
Day-to-day management of all digital content (website, intranet, social media, e-news, digital screens, video) to ensure it is appropriate, up to date, easy to find and written in plain English.
Supporting web editors, content owners and scientists to write clear, concise digital content appropriate for website, intranet, digital screens and social media channels.
Providing training and support on content management systems of website and intranet for web editors and content administrators.
Developing and managing the strategic use of social media (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube etc.) to deliver the Institute’s aims in corporate public relations and public engagement.
Managing production and distribution of internal and external e-newsletters for a range of audiences.
Monitor, analyse and report on communications activity
Monitoring and evaluating the impact of all online activity (web, social media) with the use of Google Analytics and other analytics tools
Analyse and collate performance data to provide insightful reports for senior management
Develop digital strategy using insight from data evaluation and being up to date with developments on online communication tools
This job description is only an outline of the tasks, responsibilities and outcomes required of the role. The jobholder will carry out any other duties as may be reasonably required by his/her line manager. All employees shall actively participate in the Institute-wide quality assurance system in conjunction with the Institute’s Quality Manager. Internal: Reporting to the Head Communications and Engagement, the DCC will be a key member of the Communications and Engagement Team with a role to play in raising awareness of the Institute’s work. They will interact across all functions within the Institute including senior leaders and scientists.
External: Website platform partners, hosting companies, monitoring platforms and external suppliers. Key Stakeholder groups including farmers, pharma, the general public and educational organisations and government departments.
Other: Conference, exhibition and event organisers, funders, collaborators and their respective communications/media/outreach staff.
A relevant degree, professional qualification and/or significant experience in digital communications, web content management and social media
Experience of creating and editing high quality content across a range of digital channels for external and internal stakeholders
Experience of using social media channels for business including Facebook, Linked-In and Twitter
Experience of using content management systems, particularly open source systems (WordPress and Drupal)
Experience of working with web developers, videographers, designers and IT experts
Evidence of excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and persuasively with a range of stakeholders - internal and external
Ability to assimilate and understand complex scientific information and present in a format that is easy to understand to a range of audiences
Exceptional attention to detail and rigorous application of style guides, proof reading and other quality controls in publishing content
Evidence of being able to prioritise and manage workloads
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to engage and influence colleagues at all levels
Video and audio production experience using Adobe Premier Pro and/or Spark
Experience of using digital channels to communicate science or other complex information
A flexible can-do attitude when managing requests for support and information
Experience of managing and editing electronic newsletters and magazines
Knowledge of relevant national legislation and guidelines including GDPR
Experience of working in a research organisation, research-focussed higher education institution, or science funding body
Project planning skills
Ability to work flexibly including some out of hours and weekend working
Some travel within UK to attend events/meetings
This position is Monday to Friday office-based role, 37 hours
