Systems Engineer, Electric Drive
Purpose of the Role:
To design, engineer, integrate & deliver, from concept to series-development, Electric Drive Electrical Systems ensuring they fulfil all the programme requirements (cost, timing, performance / function / attributes). EDS includes areas of Motor Systems, Motor Control Units (or Inverters), DC/DC converters, Charging Systems, DC and AC connection systems such as Power Distribution Units (PDUs), HV harnesses and associated high voltage safety systems.

Key Responsibilities:
EDS knowledge and experience – includes attribute delivery/support, managing design releases, specifications, DVPs, DFMEAs, BCR (QCRs)
Ownership and delivery of one or more EDS component
Assembly planning and allocation of one or more EDS component
EDS simulation (where required)
Supplier management of one or more EDS component

Principal Accountabilities:
Guarantee EDS integration and delivery to all vehicle projects– to specification, on time and on budget.
Knowledge of creating electrical schematics
Understands and supports the package constraints for the EDS. Working with EDS suppliers, Concept teams & DMU to ensure EDS components and systems meet technical and package targets and to deliver detailed designs on time to predetermined quality, cost and weight targets, within DFM requirements
Establish links with external organisations such as universities, research organisations, etc. on collaborative research projects that will help McLaren deliver innovation in EDS technologies where appropriate. This would include research projects with universities or other like minded organisations collaborating with the Engineering Manager/Principal Engineer of EDS and Head of Electric Drive to exploit such opportunities.
Working within, and influencing, the Vehicle Programme & Engineering Management teams to guarantee that the Electric Drive department responsibilities collectively deliver the whole vehicle specification targets.
Ensure design solutions deliver systems that meet attribute targets in NVH, thermal, durability, visibility & performance related attributes (power, emissions, and response).
Working with Supply Chain Management to ensure delivery of the EDS on schedule for all phases of prototype, pilot, pre-production and production build.
Preparation and presentation of material to support external and internal project status reviews
Provide support on EDS technical risk management to ensure project delivery, optimised vehicle performance and delivery of Electric Drive system attributes.
Guarantee EDS ownership and delivery to the specific vehicle programme requirements including:
Component Specification which specifies integration requirements for EDS.
Support management EDS development budgets & expenditure
Planning, timing & delivery including design, release, ECR in line with ETRS requirements, development and validation plans
BOM management & tracking
Robust concerns resolution
Delivery of in line with MDP (McLaren Development Process)

Knowledge, skills and experience

A good level of technical knowledge & experience of one or more EDS component in design, test & production delivery
Design / integration of electrical / electronic hardware, including circuit layout, schematics, etc.
Detailed knowledge of electrical grounding strategy, cabling, High Voltage connection topologies and safety standards.
Experience in Mechanical EDS design, packaging & release preferred
CATIA V5 2D/3D skills with GD&T application experience
Integration of EDS embedded systems
Understanding of Functional Safety and High Voltage Switchgear design in an Electric Drive
Experience of DVPs, FMEA and DFM plans at a vehicle level
PC literate and at ease with MS Office products.
Experienced in OEM or tier one component delivery

Qualifications and Training

Mechanical, Electrical/Electronic or Automotive Engineering Degree 2:1 or above

Personal Attributes:
Technical experience in high performance Electric Drive Electrical System (EDS) engineering
Good team skills, willingness to work cross-functionally with excellent communication skills.
2 years automotive design and development experience
System design and development knowledge
Experience in component release management and problem solving
Experience of high and niche vehicle (low volume) programmes
An ability to deliver under pressure with an appetite for measured success
A passion for high performance Electric Drive System engineering.
Collaborative working with ESS (Energy Storage Systems), EDC (Electric Drive Control) teams to deliver world class Electric Drive Systems
