What’s the purpose of this role?
Working within our Technology Solutions Team in Virgin Media Business, you'll be a data pipeline builder who enjoys expanding & optimizing data systems and building them from the ground up. You'll also be supporting the needs of multiple teams, systems and products to develop a range of data architectures including batch & streaming, traditional SQL and big-data data platforms.
The Technology Solutions Team team encompasses a full range of IT professionals from architecture and design through network engineers, application developers, testers and deployment engineers. All of our software is developed in-house, and is mostly bespoke. Our key data technologies are Google Cloud Platform, Percona, BigQuery and Apache Nifi.
What does the job entail?
In the role of a Data Engineer you would be responsible for a number of key activities including a few of the following_
Build and maintain streaming and batch data flows.
Transform raw data into a format that can be easily analysed.
Build analytics tools that use the data pipeline to meet key customer requirements.
Develop and maintain infrastructures for data storage.
Provide data insights and ad-hoc analysis.
Troubleshoot and resolve issues in our development, test and production environments.
Be responsible for the data integrity of our reporting systems.
Liaise with team members to clarify requirements and contribute to product & feature design and direction.
Build monitoring and alerting into data flows.
Keep data separated and secure through multiple data centers & cloud regions in line with data security & retention policies.
Participate in impact analysis, and performance analysis and tuning for data systems.
Recommend and implement ways to improve data reliability, efficiency, and quality.
Identify opportunities to enhance existing datasets with new information to enable better insight.
Contribute to improvements in development approach and toolset for data technologies.
Support architects & designers exploring latest new relevant technology, techniques, frameworks, tools, methodologies and processes.
Ensure that all work follows approved methods and standards and conforms to agreed quality, is maintained under version control & configuration management and has appropriate technical documentation.
Maintain secure working environment in line with the requirements of the Liberty Global Security Policy in order to protect individuals, information and assets.

As the right candidate for the role of Data Engineer you have some of the following_
Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases.
Experience building and optimizing ‘big data’ data pipelines, architectures and data sets.
Experience with noSQL databases
Recent successful history of practical data engineering experience, including manipulating, processing and extracting value from large disconnected datasets.
Ability to work from design specifications and follow best practice
Experience with python
Experience developing data flows with Apache NiFi
Experience managing data in BigQuery
Experience with Scrum or Kanban methodologies, working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment
It'd also be great if you had experience in designing traditional relational databases, data warehouses or data marts and an understanding of program flow and logic & OO design concepts. It'd also be good if you had experience managing data in MongoDB and familiarity with cloud infrastructures (especially Google Cloud Platform).
