This role will be responsible, and accountable, for design aspects from preliminary, crtitical and final designs. They will be contributors to the overal mechanical and electro-mechanical functions of equipment, as well as support to other areas of the business, such as prototyping, manufacture, field service and installation. This role is expected to successfully design, draw and document the mechanical engineering aspects of Company products to industry standards, fulfilling Cubic’s and the Projects requirements. Writing sub-system Requirements and the management of them forms part of the role. As well as the leading of low to medium value project pieces of work involving other team members.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
Direct involvement in evaluation of testing and report writing.
The design team is expected to work across disciplines of Mechanical and Electrical teams, as well as consider theoretical and analytical approaches to problem solving.
The Mechanical Design Engineer should be looking to improve through a combination of on-the-job-training and lesson based training.
To fulfil customer or development requirements through mechanical design, component specification, prototype, testing and documentation stages.
To assess the validity of the various design and manufacturing proposals, for good design practice and cost effectiveness across projects.
To prepare systems and engineering specifications to obtain quotations from sub-contractors and suppliers where required.
To ensure good communication both verbal and written, are maintained with management through regular reporting of issues and project meetings.
To provide technical assistance and advice to management during estimating and bid proposals.
To liaise with and report to management on performance to timescales and budgets on specific projects.
To work as part of a project team and wider engineering team to deliver complete end to end design.
To be able to work independently if required, to progress designs and produce necessary mechanical and electrical cabling drawings.
To assist with production prototypes and customer site visits (permanent employees only)
To liaise with all production, engineering and QA staff on mechanical engineering matters
Keep up to date on the latest Engineering techniques, materials and manufacturing methods.

The Design Engineer will be expected to contribute through experience and engineering judgement to the creation of product solutions, as well as project plans and estimating. This will involve both cost and time estimating for packages of work.
An element of supervising the work of others will be expected as well as supporting develoment of junior engineers within the team.

Minimum Job Requirements:
Skills knowledge and experience:
3D Solid modelling and drawing experience in Solidworks 2016 or similar. Other CAD experience will be considered.
Experience with EDPM or similar PLM software
Working knowledge of AutoCAD version 2002 and 2009 for creating 2D drawings
Experience of designing castings, sheet metalwork, mouldings, electronic harnesses and electro-mechanical module design.
Experience of testing and evaluating prototypes.
Technical writing experience
Cost estimating and project planning
3D cabling / surfacing experience in Solidworks 2016
Any previous experience of designing revenue collection equipment, vending machines or special purpose machinery would be highly desirable.
Membership of or working towards membership of an Engineering Professional body.
Industrial design / rapid concept design experience.
Previous experience of producing component, wiring and schematic diagram drawings.
Education and qualifications
Minimum HND/HNC in a relevant engineering field, or equivalent supported by relevant design experience
BEng / BSc / MEng in Mechanical Engineering, General Engineering or Design Engineering or a relevant engineering field.
Must be able to work well as part of a team of engineers of all experience levels, and independently with minimal supervision as and when required.
Be a self-starter and with a drive to develop skills through prescribed training and on the job learning.
Have a high attention to detail
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
