Primary Purpose of the role
A Systems Engineer with an Airborne Antenna Systems and communications background is required to join our System Engineering department. Reporting operationally to the Systems Engineering Manager and functionally to the Head of Systems Engineering, the successful applicant will be working primarily, but not exclusively, in the commercial fixed wing environment, specifying and designing Antenna Systems for airborne communication systems and subsystems and integrating these with a variety of avionics systems on a variety of platforms. The Systems Engineer will be responsible for the execution and delivery of assigned work package tasks to budget and schedule.
Key tasks and responsibilities
To execute Systems Engineering tasks associated with Antenna System development in accordance with the company DDQS Process, the relevant Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) and associated subordinate Engineering Plans.
To lead on the design and development of Antenna Systems for fixed wing, rotary wing, and UAV platforms for SATCOM, Air to Ground (3G, 4G LTE, 5G), and other communication systems covering various frequency bands and Non-Terrestrial Networks used by current and future civil & military communication systems
Define System and Subsystem Architecture, considering wider product policy and technology roadmaps
Preparation of Systems Requirement Specifications, requirements definition and allocation to Subsystems; working collaboratively with other engineering disciplines to ensure the correct flow down of requirements and flow up of compliance evidence
Preparation of Interface Specifications
Preparation of Technical Statements of Work for equipment suppliers, and management of equipment subcontractors
Preparation and execution of Work Packages that scope and deliver design and development activities
Preparation of IVVQ Plans for Antenna Systems, development of Test Means and Test Schedules, and execution of subsequent tests providing evidence for functional and non-functional requirement acceptance across all planned test points
Contribute to the execution of the System Qualification & Certification
To work closely in support of the relevant Systems Engineering Manager to ensure the delivery of development WPs to cost, schedule and quality
To support in the identification, mitigation and closure of dependencies, Risks & Opportunities
Contributes Systems Engineering expertise and process knowledge to enhance company objectives and processes, effectively communicating and gathering support for them. Contributes to Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) estimates and supports proposals, customer presentations, and new product design
Essential and Desirable Skills/Experience
Knowledge of Civil / Military Aviation Communications Systems, technology, protocols and networks, both current and future visions & trends. In particular knowledge of Inmarsat and Iridium services and Swift Broadband (ARINC 781, 771A, 761 & 741, and DO262C MOPS) are sought
An understanding of different antenna architectures (active and passive, phased arrays, fixed and steerable etc.) across different frequency bands
Experience and understanding of the challenges associated with designing equipment for airborne environments, including mechanical and structural considerations
Experience of requirements capture, decomposition and management (e.g. in DOORS)
System architectural design experience. Architectural modelling capability is beneficial
Experience of developing models of system performance (e.g. In MatLab/Simulink or alternative tool set) is beneficial
Understanding of engineering standards, engineering processes and maturity models
Experience in development of systems in accordance with ARP4754A, ARP4761 and supporting RTCA DO-178B software development and DO-254 hardware development
Experience working with network systems, protocols, and networking principles, data, voice, or video and network software and hardware, data, voice, or video
PC Literate: Windows, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio
