We are looking for a knowledgeable Principal Engineer to work in our Highways Structures team who ideally holds a degree in Civil Engineering or proven experience of working at that level. You will also need to have experience of effectively managing staff, and competent in using Microsoft Office, GIS based mapping systems and working knowledge of AutoCAD and other structural analysis packages including TEDDS and Archie-M.
As a Principal Engineer in our Highways Structures team you will:
Undertake project and programme management, managing resources and budgets.
Undertake and manage the design and procurement of new and strengthening of highway structures.
Undertake contract management and site supervision of Strengthening / Reconstruction Work
Undertake and manage General and Principal Inspections of highway Bridges (Span 0.9m), Culverts (Span 0.9m), Footbridges (Span 0.9m), Subways and Sign Gantries and the structural inspections and assessments of highway Bridges, Culverts, Footbridges, Subways and Sign gantries. Commenting on the structural assessments/inspection reports of others.
Undertake and manage unprogrammed Inspections of highway structures including highway retaining walls.
Undertake the relevant duty holder’s role under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, in particular, Designer / Principal Designer
Ensure all activities are undertaken in compliance with legal, regulatory, contractual an internal requirements.
Respond to reports of structures collapses which impact on the highway.
Technical input into Section 38/278 and private developments in relation to new highway structures.
Prepare bids to secure additional funding for the maintenance of highway structures
Supervise contractors and our own in-house construction teams
Be responsible for the wellbeing of yourself and others on a day to day basis and the management, supervision and mentoring of Engineers, Senior Engineers and Apprentices within in your team, including Appraisals, 1-2-1’s etc.
Liaise, advise and work closely with councillors and communities as well as outside organisations on issues relating to structures, and understand the need for effective and efficient communication, both written and verbal.
Undertake the technical approval of developer led design of highway structures and private structures located within the highway boundary.
Technical input into Planning Applications.
Management of abnormal load movements throughout the district
Need a full and valid driving licence, and a willingness to undertake and pass a Kirklees Council driving test, or ability to use public transport - which ever method is most appropriate and cost effective, as whilst being predominantly office-based, it also involves attending meetings and site meetings.
