Warhead Mechanical Design Engineer
Location - Reading / Basingstoke Area

AWE are looking for Mechanical Design Engineers to join an existing team responsible for the design, manufacture, assembly and testing of robust, high voltage vacuum switches. Currently the team is made up of Engineers and Scientists and work together with our peers in the USA.
Your role will be to develop capability and understanding of all aspects of these specialist products from the underpinning properties and science through to the system level qualification of these highly reliable, unique products that can survive space flight and vehicle accidents. We have our own laboratories to support this mission.
Applicants must have an understanding of mechanical design and specification with experience of use of design tools such CAD / CAE as well as product realisation and manufacturing techniques. Ideally previous experience of 3D solid modelling (Siemens NX, Solidworks etc) and generation of technical drawings including the use of GD&T, though further training will be provided.
Though not to be considered a check list, candidates would also benefit from knowledge of ANY of the following:
Joining techniques – brazing, welding, adhesives, etc
Manufacturing techniques – additive, stamping, precision machining, etc.
Dry lubricants or other surface coatings
Tooling, jigs and fixtures
Finite Element Analysis or Rigid Body Dynamics
Designing and undertaking mechanical product tests to validate designs
Selection of materials based on requirements
Tooling, jigs and fixtures
Potting techniques and options
Designing to withstand challenging environments
To be considered for these roles, ideally you will have an HNC/HND or degree qualification in an engineering discipline or proven experience working in a similar environment and possess strong communication skills.
Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
