We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to join our Business Connections Team, producing designs for electricity connections to our distribution network up to and including 6.6kV / 11kV.
This role can be based in Preston or Carlisle.
As a Design Engineer you will be required to have technical expertise, skills and knowledge to model the existing distribution network and produce high quality design and quotations for demand and generation connections, including associated diversion and reinforcement work. You will need to be familiar with new Low Carbon technologies that are connecting to the Distribution Network such as Electric Vehicle chargers, heat pumps, battery technology etc as we help our region move towards net zero. Delivering exceptional customer service is key to this role in order to sustain a healthy order book to achieve your acceptance targets.
You will ensure designs are safe and minimum cost solutions in accordance with Electricity North West Licence Conditions, Common Connections Charging Methodology and Electricity North West Policy and Standards of compliance, and provide excellent customer service. You will also be responsible for adhering to Ofgem’s standards, data integrity and provide accurate forecasts of information for the range of projects under your control.
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a high level of technical experience and strong leadership skills in order to lead a small team, manage workloads to meet regulatory standards and customer expectations, introduce business changes and assist with performance reviews to identify the training needs of less experienced colleagues to deliver or arrange training. You will also deputise for the Leadership team when necessary.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
A minimum of an HNC level qualification in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (essential);
A sound understanding of 6.6kV / 11kV systems and substations, including switchgear, transformers, overhead, underground circuits and protection;
Extensive experience with electrical engineering design and practices and have an in-depth knowledge of the electricity distribution business, including an understanding of regulatory and industry standards within electricity distribution;
A sound technical knowledge of electrical network components, network operation, operational policy, design standards and specifications;
An understanding of Construction Design Management regulations relating to utility projects;
Sound leadership and motivational skills with the ability to work in a team and help others in your team to improve;
An in-depth knowledge / understanding of the competition in the connections market;
A broad understanding of the construction industry and the particular role Electricity North West undertakes;
Have an optimistic approach to problem solving;
The ability to tenaciously deal with and overcome objections;
Strong empathy with clients and their buying journey;
Excellent customer service skills both face to face and by telephone;
Excellent written and verbal communication;
A highly driven and self-motivated individual;
Excellent organisation and time management;
The ability to build long lasting stakeholder relationships;
Strong IT skills, in particular MS Office;
The ability to work confidentiality and with discretion;
Flexibility and adaptability;
