Purpose of the Role
Lead the Colas Rail Engineering input into ERTMS fitment plan for Locomotives (and OTM where applicable).
Lead the First of Fit team for the Colas nominated classes of Locomotives for ERTMS fitment.
Work with the Fleet Engineer to ensure the effective undertaking of fleet maintenance and engineering of Colas owned and contracted rail vehicles in order to maximise their operational efficiency, reliability, safety and availability.

Key Areas of Responsibility & Accountability
To take the Lead on all Engineering initiatives with relation to ERTMS fitment on Colas Locomotives (and OTM where applicable).
Produce new or amended engineering documents following changes to statutory and other external requirements as required based on fleet safety or reliability performance and lessons learnt within the industry.
Provide engineering input to support business analysis and recommendations made on options for the acquisition, maintenance, modification and major repair of rail vehicles.
Provide input to the development of the engineering standards and specifications for rail vehicles and assist with changes to the safety management system, engineering policy, certification and training/competency issues relating to in-house vehicle maintenance.
Provide specialist rail vehicle engineering input to the development of operational and maintenance processes to enable efficient and safe usage of in-house rail vehicle maintenance facilities.
Lead the review, optimisation and amendment of new and revised vehicle maintenance instructions.
Support reliability and best practice initiatives through the business unit.
Support internal and external audit regimes, processes and demonstrate prompt engagement to close out items raised.
Provide engineering input into contract/tender submissions.
The job holder will be experienced in rail vehicle engineering and maintenance. Additionally the job holder will have experience of maintenance and asset management systems and leading change. The ideal candidate should have a working knowledge of the rail operating environment, standards and safety procedures. The job holder will be a motivated self-starter, an able and clear communicator, dynamic and tenacious.
Experience as a rail vehicle fleet engineer within the rail industry
Experience with Locomotives ,On-Track Machines and freight wagons desirable..
HNC/D or higher in an engineering discipline and ideally with Incorporated status or higher.
Member of a professional engineering body
Experience of maintenance engineering, reliability engineering, vehicle overhaul and refurbishment
Working knowledge of Railway Group Standards and their application.
Good understanding and experience in the application of safety legislation and corporate safety procedures.
Commercially aware and adaptive to needs of the business.
Must be able to communicate effectively with colleagues, external organisations and management
Experience of cost control management
Implement a comprehensive system of change control procedures to ensure that vehicle technical changes are properly administered.
Actively champions and promotes change and innovation to improve own and teams performance
Develops relationships within their area of expertise and confidently influences other parts of the business to achieve results
Demands continuous improvement by setting challenging objectives
Provide on-call engineering support as required by the business.
Deputise for the Professional Head of Engineering when required.
