Trainee Engineer – Higher Apprenticeship – London – HS2
Our apprentice programme is a great opportunity to gain a recognised qualification from college, whilst working on one of our Major projects.
Joining Skanska as a Trainee Engineer, you will complete a 3-year training programme studying a Level 4 (post A-Levels) qualification while working on the HS2 project, the UK’s new high-speed rail network. It will be a catalyst for economic growth across Britain, freeing up space on the existing railways and connecting 8 out of the UK’s 10 biggest cities with fast, reliable and frequent high-speed services.
What you will do:
Work alongside our project engineers and construction managers to develop an understanding of the daily control, management and coordination of construction and civil engineering activities
Develop practical understanding of the importance of health and safety and the environmental requirements involved
Carry surveying and setting out activities on site
Your responsibilities will increase throughout the apprenticeship programme as your technical knowledge and skills develop
Study towards a Level 4 High Speed Rail and Infrastructure Higher apprenticeship at the National College of Advanced Transport & Infrastructure
What we offer:
Through day release to London South Bank University, Skanska will provide support and funding to help you achieve a Level 4 qualification in Civil Engineering
As part of your apprenticeship, you will be working towards the relevant professional body (ICE) accreditation and can progress on to Level 6-degree apprenticeship after successful completion of Level 4

Who you are:
For us to enrol you on a Level 4 apprenticeship, you will hold a standard set of A-Levels or another Level 3 qualification such as BTEC in a mathematical subject and/or Physical Science
You’ll be a self-starter and above all you will share our ethical values

Skanska is delivering the HS2 Main Civils Contracts which include both Lots S1 (Euston Tunnels & Approaches) and S2 (Northolt Tunnels) in a joint venture with Costain and STRABAG, forming SCS Joint Venture - JV). The combined value of the contracts is around £1.8billion with the works due for completion in 2025. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
You’ll be a welcomed member of the wider team, with opportunities to take on additional responsibility, join one of our networks for women, military or LGBT staff, and participate in cultural and social events with the local community (e.g. as a STEM ambassador).
