NATS is the UK’s leading air navigation service provider, handling over 2 million flights each year. It provides air traffic control services from two control centres supporting airports all around the UK, as well as a wide range of commercial solutions to over 30 countries internationally.
Principal Systems Engineer (aka Programme System Engineering Manager (PSEM)) – Deployment
NATS is looking to recruit an experienced PSEM who will be accountable for the Deployment deliverables, for all current and future programmes. You will perform System Engineering activities at the top of V-Model, including: requirements management, transition strategy and design, regulatory compliance with the Safety and Airspace Regulatory Group (SARG) and V&V activities. Reporting to the Head of Technical Delivery, the PSEM leads an established team of System Engineers delivering the Deployment deliverables across the full programme lifecycle, for both internal and external NATS customers.
Key responsibilities are:
Elicitation and capture of functional and non-functional requirements – You will be required to lead and manage the activity to deliver the user requirements for various programmes.
Conduct the Customer Facing Services (CFS) thread for each Programme - All of the external Customer Facing Services (CFS) responsibilities must be conducted by the Deployment PSEM, as this role is the main interface to external customers.
Conduct the Transition strategy and design - The Operational and Technical transition is an activity to be conducted by the Deployment PSEM as it is driven by Air Traffic Control (ATC) and it needs to consider the known technical constraints, considering the systems as a black box.
Manage the regulatory compliance and interface with SARG – You will lead this activity taking input from the regulatory compliance team, which identifies the regulation changes and the necessary compliance at the Deployment point.
Leading a team of established System Engineers, you will have 8-10 direct reports and 50+ indirect reports. You will be expected to have strong leadership skills and be able to work with customers and partners. Due to the front-facing nature of the role you will also need good presentation, communication and negotiation skills.
The applicant is expected to hold, as a minimum, a degree (or an equivalent qualification) in an Engineering-related discipline and have a relevant experience in an appropriate system engineering environment. Applicants not holding the expected qualification but who have undertaken structured Engineering training recognised by a professional body and have extensive engineering experience will be considered. Applicants are expected to have gained or be working towards professional registration e.g. Chartered Engineer.
