Vacancy: Senior Electrochemical Engineer (Battery Materials)

Johnson Matthey Battery Materials (JMBM) is building our second battery application testing centre at the Milton Park business park in Oxfordshire. The UK2 battery application centre will provide advanced application testing on varying Li-Ion cell form factors using advanced analytical, electrochemical (Echem), diagnostic, modelling, and safety abuse methods. Testing will support development goals for Customer funded programmes, JMBM commercial plants, JMBM global commercial team, Product development teams, and Global Application teams.
This will allow us to increase understanding and aide in method development of single layer pouch and multi-layer pouch cells within the UK2 application centre. In addition, you will lead in cross-training of JM personnel, with inputs from/to quality teams to enable alignment of best practices site-to-site for SLP and 1-2Ah pouch cell methods. This will enable optimisation of our suite of materials for different business targets to help facilitating commercial team wins with automotive customers.
Lead E-chem activities coordinated by the applications test hall manager, in collaboration with the Product Development team for high paced customer projects to demonstrate equivalency in larger cell from factors.
Electrochemical evaluation of developmental cathode material grades, including working with development team to understand and optimise electrochemical and physical properties
Engage with scientists and engineers in our product and process innovation programmes
Maintain rigorous and traceable quality control (QC) documentation; concomitant data capture and management. Interface where necessary with dedicated quality systems team
Work as part of a team to deliver on continual improvement projects.
Generate reports and work to tight deadlines in a dynamic environment
Maintain electrochemical facility, adhering to SOPs and contributing to improvement activities.
Contribute with other onsite team members to quality control testing of cathode materials for customers. Develops bespoke testing protocols and data analysis in support of Customer and Continuous Improvement projects and advanced testing methodologies in support of scale up & process development and step out projects.
Interface with formulation expert to translate new methods into standard operating procedures (SOPs) subject to automotive auditing; strictly adhering to protocols
Support the final commissioning of UK2 Echem equipment, in collaboration with UK2 project manager, project tech leads, TSL and site contractor. Responsibility for cold and hot commissioning processes for UK2 application labs, followed by validation of methods/SOPs and equipment to achieve RTO status, compliant with best practice agreed with the quality team and automotive/ISO standards.
Uses learnings from JM teams to adapt testing procedures based on customer feedback and advanced testing requirements.
Drives synergy and cross-functional echem training and standardisation across JMBM Application Centres, including on-site training of JP1 Application Team.
Deliver high quality, on-time SLP and multi-layer pouch cell sample echem analysis for the BM teams – Manufacturing, Scale up, Product and Process improvement
Develops standard safety and abuse testing methods and best practices with a focus on safety.
Work with quality team to ensure automotive audit standards are met for all echem activities within the centre
Support customer visits to showcase new centre and facilitate an understanding of our capabilities.

Are you the ideal candidate?
You will be / have the following criteria:
Advanced technical degree required, preferably a Ph.D. in a related field
Demonstrable experience in a business environment developing commercially relevant lithium-ion battery materials using lean methodologies
Ability to work to tight deadlines in a dynamic, time conscious environment
Experienced in battery cell testing, developing new battery test protocols, translating new methodologies and advanced data processing; familiarity with typical battery testing software programmes is expected, skills in Mintab, JMP, LabView, MATLAB would be advantageous
Understanding of battery materials, slurry and electrode properties and interlink with cell performance.
Good communication skills to relay and obtain buy-in on results across sites globally
Commercial and IP awareness of the battery materials field
Experience interacting with external customers; track record of achieving best-in-class results in customer testing
Ability to travel occasionally both domestically and internationally to support multi-site operations and customers
