In Tunnel and Underground Infrastructure, you will become part of COWI's Tunnels unit. Tunnel & Underground Infrastructure has hundreds of skilled experts worldwide and have one of the largest infrastructure departments in the world. We are experienced in all types of tunnels and infrastructure in sectors ranging from railways, highways, metros to energy and power, and we cover the entire lifecycle of a project from idea, concept and design to operation and maintenance.
The Lower Thames Crossing is the single biggest roads investment project since the M25 was completed more than 30 years ago. It will form a vital part of the UK's transport infrastructure and will help businesses large and small to grow and bring people and communities closer to job, education and leisure opportunities. It will connect Essex and Kent and almost double road capacity across the Thames east of London.
EXTEND YOUR POTENTIAL WITHIN A TEAM OF EXPERTS
In this position, you will join our global team of experts and work closely with the Ground Investigation Technical Manager. Your primary role will be to produce the ground investigation specification for tender and updating the specification as the ground model and engineering/design requirements for the scheme mature over time as follow: -
GI scope (that requires liaison with all LTC workstreams including technical, DCO, procurement)
GIS, Data handling, Technical support
Data Quality Assurance
Technical support to GI change control
On a day to day basis, you will be responsible for:
Preparation of the ground investigation specification, as directed by the Ground Investigation Technical Manager, to address the requirements of the geotechnical and other LTC teams (e.g. tunnelling/portals, highways, environmental, groundwater, contamination, sustainability, TPIs, archaeology, landscaping, architectural, etc);
Preparation of the ground investigation technical specifications including, but not limited to:
on land, near-shore and over-water investigations, traditional invasive investigations (cable percussion, rotary, sonic boreholes, trial pits, window sampling, etc);
In situ testing (SPT, CPT, pressuremeter testing, down-hole logging geophysics, cross-hole geophysics, etc);
Groundwater and Geo-environmental/Contamination sampling, testing and monitoring (pumping tests, packer tests, soil, groundwater, leachate and gas sampling and monitoring, etc)
active and passive surface geophysics surveys (resistivity, seismic, GPR, etc)
core logging and sample selection;
samples handling and storage;
basic, advanced and specialist laboratory testing. (ie. standard geotechnical, soil and groundwater contamination, aggressiveness of soil/groundwater to buried concrete, advanced testing for FEM parameters, specific testing for TBM, conveyors, etc)
monitoring (ie. environmental monitoring of groundwater and ground-gasses, settlement, baselining, remote digital and analogic monitoring, etc)
inclusion of AGS and GIS requirements
third parties, environmental aspects, etc
Change Control & Technical Support
Provide (office based) technical support to the GI delivery team, if required by the Ground Investigation Technical Lead in the absence of the Ground Investigation Support Engineers (Geology/Geotechnics or Hydrogeology/Geo-environmental).
Assurance and Quality
Promoting innovation, best practice and lessons learned from other major UK/international projects.
Knowledgeable and experienced in the requirements set up in Eurocode and other relevant standards and best practice (e.g. CIRIA) including those from Association of Geotechnical and Geo-environmental Specialists AGS, British Drilling Association BDA, Federation of Piling Specialists FPS, etc;
Knowledge of geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering design processes and experience in selecting methods and tests to obtain information to inform design;
Team oriented engineer with the ability to liaise closely with peer
Ensure that the highest quality ground investigation is specified
Ensuring HSW and CDM requirements are considered during the design of the GI;
Comply with the internal standards, QA processes and policies
Ensure that activities are specified in compliance with the consent granted by statutory or non-statutory stakeholders or other bodies.

Furthermore, you shall have the following skills and experience:
You hold a degree in Civil Engineering or Engineering Geology
You have the clear understanding of geology, geotechnics, civil engineering for transport infrastructures, environmental, contamination, hydrogeology, monitoring is essential;
You are experienced on linear infrastructures (Highways or Tunnelling) schemes along with proven experience of working on multi-discipline schemes
You have good understanding of the London Basin geology as well as previous work experience in the area
You have knowledge of sustainability, GIS, contract management, in the context of GI
You have proven experience in specifying large scale ground investigations along with the NEC3 Contract administration experience
