At QinetiQ Haslar that is one of our core offerings, we help customers to understand how their vessel will perform and can be used; creating a safe performance envelope for them as well as evaluating efficiency. We have among the world's best facilities for hydrodynamic testing at model scale; as well as commercial work QinetiQ have strategic capability agreements with the Ministry of Defence to ensure we're innovating and delivering UK Test and Evaluation for them.
In order to achieve this we have extensive in house capability for development of the vessels and hardware within them, for rapid prototyping and manufacture. We build and instrument complete scale models of these vessels in house within our facilities and then perform testing, much like a Formula One car would be tested in a wind tunnel, but in the water.
It's an exciting time as we're progressively upgrading our capabilities over the coming years, so you will have opportunity as Electronics & Instrumentation Engineer to input to the design of new instrumentation and control setups for these boats and our facilities. There's also scope to learn other controls based skills (e.g. Rockwell PLCs) as we have facilities here which need to stay online during trials and we can't always wait for outside help to arrive.
You will unlikely get the chance to deal with this plethora of hardware elsewhere as well as inputting to future development of it; it will be a great opportunity for you to work with some great people and technology.
You will provide Instrumentation support to the Haslar facilities, reporting to the Controls Systems South Team Leader.
The Electronics & Instrumentation Engineer will manage and Lead instrumentation tasks and activities
You will be responsible for the setup and maintenance of certain facility related control and instrumentation hardware.
The Electronics & Instrumentation Engineer will be responsible for the maintenance of electrical + electronic equipment, and Portable Appliance Testing.
The Electronics & Instrumentation Engineer experience of DC circuits e.g. such as those used in small vehicles, in particular boats and other electric vehicle experience would be good.
You should have a strong and demonstrated ability to work 'hands-on' from first principles to safely diagnose electrical and electronic issues (to board level only) and implement prompt, effective and safe repair schemes.
The Electronics & Instrumentation Engineer should have the ability to draw Electronic and Electrical drawings.
