Golder has a new opportunity for an Engineering Geologist/Geotechnical Engineer to join our Ground Engineering team on a full-time basis based in Edinburgh.
The Engineering Geologist/Geotechnical Engineer will provide geotechnical input and expertise on a range of civil engineering and mining projects, and in other project environments as required, both in the UK and internationally.
Key duties and responsibilities include:
Be responsible for project management and delegation of tasks to other engineers and geologists;
Carry out geotechnical assessments and detailed designs of rock and soil slopes and to a lesser extent underground excavations, including rock mass classification (Q, RMR, GSI), with associated LE and FE stability assessment modelling, kinematic analysis and reporting;
Design, planning and execution of geotechnical site investigations, including logging of rock and soil core, sampling for laboratory testing and field testing;
Development of geological and engineering geological / geotechnical models from site investigation data. 3D visualisation of geological and geotechnical models ideally using Vulcan software;
Assist in the production of technical reports and proposals;
Engage in business development activities, identifying and pursuing (when appropriate) opportunities for Golder;
Develop new and existing client relationships, maintaining regular contact and managing expectations;
Train and mentor team members and train client engineers and geologists in geotechnical data collection best practice;
Be recognised as a mentor and role model, offering motivation and encouragement to achieve results;
Project based travel and site work, working away both in the UK and overseas. The frequency and duration of this will depend on business and client needs;
Display a ‘safety first’ attitude in line with an interdependent health and safety culture, promote positive health and safety, raise safety issues through the appropriate channels and adhere to Golder health and safety policy and procedures;

Skills, Qualifications, and Experience:
Qualified to MSc level within geotechnical engineering, rock mechanics, mining, or engineering geology;
Demonstrable experience of advanced numerical modelling methods (FEM as a minimum with DEM desirable).;
Developed technical report writing skills;
Experience of geotechnical data collection, from planning through to execution (from both face mapping and geotechnical core, including familiarity with core orientation techniques);
Experience of ground investigation / drill programme management inclusive of Health and Safety management;
Experience in the detailed design of rock and soil slope stabilisation, including rockfall mitigation;
Experience in the detailed design of reinforced earth, soil reinforcement and embedded retaining wall design would be desirable;
Experience in the detailed design of underground openings in rock would be desirable
Commercial understanding of consultancy;
Experience of the RocScience suite of software (Dips, RocFall, Slide, RocData, Swedge, UnWedge etc);
Strong project and task management skills;
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written (in English);
Ability to liaise with clients and build/develop relationships effectively;
Effective business developer and networker, both internally and externally;
Ability to work independently, display initiative and decision-making skills;
Positive approach to working as a mentor and in a team environment;
Full driving licence; and
Willingness and ability to travel in the UK and internationally.
