We have an opportunity for a talented and motivated GIS Developer with proven GIS experience and a passion for spatial data and spatial application development to join our Digital Team.
We would like you to play a leading role in helping us to advance our GIS Server infrastructure, publish/maintain GIS data services and build web based map viewers to deliver Geoscience data and information to a variety of stakeholders.
You will gain exposure to a variety of modern technologies, development-environments and information-architectures, all within an agile culture that encourages learning and development and the following of industry best practice from inception to delivery.
You will also have the opportunity to communicate your work and the work of the Digital Team through conference presentations, attendance at workshops and through written papers.
Several of our software development projects require collaboration with partners across the UK and beyond, creating information systems to support scientific research, or developing Geoscience software for commercial customers.
We would also encourage applications from less experienced candidates with a desire to develop the required skills criteria – albeit at a more junior level than the advertised salary.

Shortlisting (S) and Interview (I) Criteria
Relevant undergraduate degree and/or equivalent work experience. (S&I)
Relevant postgraduate qualification. (S&I)
Minimum of two years relevant work experience since undergraduate degree or equivalent (S&I)
Experience of ESRI desktop GIS applications e.g. ArcMap/ArcGIS Pro (S&I)
Proven web development skills building spatial applications (S&I)
Experience of ArcGIS Server for creating map services. (S&I)
Experience of desktop GIS analysis (S&I)
Experience of desktop GIS application development (S&I)
Background in geoscience or similar. (S&I)
Demonstrates an understanding and practical application of key concepts in spatial application development such as working with large spatial and temporal datasets, and spatial reference systems. (S&I)
Knowledge of ArcGIS Online (S&I)
Knowledge of GIS scripting languages e.g. Python (S&I)
Skills and Abilities
Must show evidence of being keen and able to learn new concepts and technologies relating to development, spatial data delivery, processing and visualisation – must be able to do this both quickly and independently. (S&I)
Must demonstrate good verbal and written communication skills and be able to communicate effectively with both junior and senior members of staff (S&I)
Must demonstrate the ability to work well in a team. (S&I)
Demonstrates a genuine interest in the work of BGS, NERC and UKRI (S&I)
Displays enthusiasm for GIS and GIS development work. (I)
Working hours will be 37 per week excluding lunch breaks.
