Chemical Plant Shift Leader
Salary: £43,500 Inclusive of Shift Allowance and Excellent Benefits Package
A fantastic opportunity to join a leading global producer of advanced speciality chemicals in manufacturing leadership role.
Working at our Huddersfield site, you will be leading a team of operatives producing a range of reactive and formulated products in accordance with our standard operating procedures on a CoMAH registered Chemical Manufacturing Unit. Responsible for managing, mentoring and developing shift operations staff to ensure daily shift targets are achieved, in line with key performance indicators. Reporting directly to the Production Manager, you will be expected to work autonomously and therefore will be responsible for day to day operations, carrying out any necessary fault diagnosis, escalating and resolving issues as required.
We are looking for a confident shift leader who will:
Provide leadership and coaching for your direct reports
Build an effective team by motivating and developing operations staff
Possess an acute awareness of the HS&E standards required on a CoMAH site
Lead/ manage a self-directed team of 1 indirect and 2 direct reports (limited day to day management interaction due to shift pattern). Ensure safe operation of shift. Liaise with the Production Management and Global Supply Chain (PPIC) at regular intervals regarding production matters and shift attainment.
Flexibility to operate in different areas as and when required to meet the demands of the plant, overlapping a number of duties/responsibilities with the CPT and assisting the MSO where required.
Act as Incident Controller in the event of an emergency situation – duties include accounting for all staff on the plant at the time, providing information to emergency service personnel and to provide assistance as requested in responding to the incident
Compliance with operating procedures including ISO 9001, CoMAH (top tier) & IPPC, process instructions, Engineering, and HS&E procedures. Ensure direct reports compliance with these systems.
Ensure safe working practices are adhered to on shift, including contractor management and maintaining housekeeping standards.
Carry out maintenance activities and ensure engineering standards are maintained throughout the plant area, including both breakdown and planned engineering scenarios.
Primary issuer of permits to allow others to carry out engineering activities. Contractor management.
Conduct alarm & trip testing procedures, instrument calibration and other preventative activities such as lubrication of equipment.
Shift expert for DCS management in the operation, fault diagnosis and rectification of the automated plant. Close communication with the plant Process Engineer for continual improvement of the DCS system
Sample the reactors and conduct in-process analytical check to ensure product will meet manufacturing specification. Simple fault diagnosis and rectification (maintaining analytical equipment to meet in-process requirements)
Carry out training of new staff to ensure they are familiar with detailed operating requirements before validation.
Work closely with technical support / management staff in executing investigative or experimental programmes and in implementing change projects such as new product introduction. Lead continuous improvement projects in areas impacting plant KPI’s.
Lead project teams to improve KPI measures and bring forward new ideas on plant operations, yielding operational efficiencies.
Maintain accurate written records as required (such as completing PI sheets and stock counts).
Manage PPE and other plant consumable stock levels and reorder as and when required
Skills & Knowledge:
Use of computer systems (SAP, MS office and DCS) and numeracy / literacy skills (written and verbal communication skills)
Evaluation of plant data and identification of corrective action
HS&E awareness – compliance with safe systems of work, knowledge of standards
Maintenance skills to ensure completion of engineering tasks as and when required
Prioritisation of tasks and planning shift activities – work planning
Attention to detail – compliance with operating instructions, keeping records etc.
Fork lift truck operation
Overall level of physical fitness required to be good as tasks such as charging and maintenance activities need to be undertaken (including in some areas with restricted access / confinement)
