The Materials Research Facility (MRF) is a state-of-the-art research facility at the UK Atomic Energy Authority, created to analyse material properties in support of both fission and fusion energy research.
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for designing adaptations to the sample preparation equipment and scientific instruments, so that they can be safely operated with remote handling manipulators or robotic arms.
Key accountabilities will include:
- Creating concept designs of electro-mechanical widgets or adaptations of existing equipment using 3D CAD tools
- Progressing designs solutions from concept through to detailed design
- Employ classic or numerical analyses to substantiate design activities, ensuring that detailed designs are appropriately validated
- Specifying of electrical/electronical devices (e.g. instrumentation, drivers, and associated wiring)
- Production of technical specifications and tender documentation as required by the projects, and of technical reports, notes and journal/conference papers where required
- Proactively seek to elaborate design requirements and define interfaces where these are design-driving, working to and maintaining established procedures
- Supervise junior engineers and students as well as leading CAD draughtsmen working on detailed engineering design
- Act as a Technical Reference for other group members in areas of specialist knowledge
- Establishing ways to remotely access/operate equipment via a remote/network link

Knowledge skills and experience
- Engineering council recognised mechanical engineering degree or equivalent experience
- Experience in mechanism design and use of 3D CAD
- Experience in design substantiation analysis using hand calculations
- Good working knowledge of structural and thermal engineering, solid mechanics and engineering materials
- Good working knowledge of electro-mechanical devices
- Competence in generating technical documents and specifications
- Ability to work as part of a larger team or group
- Experience in engineering design in a nuclear context
- Experience in finite element techniques
- Experience in electric/electronics design
- Experience in use of MATLAB or equivalent
- Membership of a Professional Engineering Institution
- Work in radiation and beryllium-controlled areas may be required as part of the role
