We are looking for a Graduate/Assistant Engineer to join our Capital Projects Team to implement a range of ‘public realm’ schemes inspired by the need to alleviate road safety issues, through the local safety scheme programme, or schemes that are sites of special historic interest. The role forms part of WSP’s Highways and Transportation services to Westminster City Council (WCC) and entails close working with the contractor FM Conway. We have a team of 50 technical staff co-located in the FM Conway project office in Mandela Way, Southwark, providing design and project management services to the commission.
A typical week would include:
Assisting with the feasibility, design, consultation and implementation of high profile and prestigious public realm highway schemes of scheme value anywhere up to £3 million pounds.
Working within a team to produce designs, drawings, reports and estimates for the above construction projects. You are also likely to be involved in the assessment, design and implementation of safety improvement schemes that are of immediate concern to residents and everyday users, meaning close consultation and communication with our contractor partner, monitoring of construction on site to ensure compliance with Westminster’s standards.
All staff are encouraged and assisted to progress their training towards ICE Incorporated or Chartered status, with internal and external training opportunities provided. You will be expected to participate in and contribute to the graduate training activities in the Mandela Way project office.
We'd love to hear from you if you have:
A civil engineering degree with experience in highway design. At the more experienced level, you will have good post graduate experience in a civil engineering working environment.
A sound engineering foundation and an interest and understanding of highway design principles (alignments, drainage, footway and carriageway construction etc.).
The ability to work effectively with colleagues including more senior and junior staff in producing designs, drawings and reports is essential. You will need to have good written and spoken communication skills and be able to work as part of a team.
Basic knowledge to be able to assist in the preparation of designs for highway schemes.
Ability to seek clarity of instructions, check own work before submitting for approval, agree and meet timescales for items of work. You will contribute to the delivery of concept studies and strategies with hands on design, leading to planning applications or construction drawing issue.
Some prior experience of working in a highways or related discipline, either in a client, consultant or contracting role, would be desirable but not essential.
